Frances is survived by: her daughter, Joanne (David) Babey, her son, Marvin (Dagmar), her grandchildren, Andrea (Colin) Fong, Andrew (Krystie McLellan) Babey, Michele, Jacqueline, Nicole and Richard Romanow, her great grandchildren, Nathaniel and Hana Fong, her sisters, Olga (Joseph) Sherban and Mary (Adam) Kotyk, sister in law Angeline (Steve) Borowetz, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Frances was predeceased by her infant daughter, Olga, husband, Joseph, parents, Peter and Warwara Kowbel, parents in law, John and Paulashka Romanow, brothers Joseph, William and John, sisters Helen and infant Stella, sisters in law Stella Kowbel and Anne Kowbel.

Frances was born to Peter and Warwara Kowbel on their homestead farm near Smuts, Saskatchewan. She grew up on the farm with six siblings attending Borsczcow School which was located close to Pryma Church near Smuts, Saskatchewan. Frances moved to Canora, Saskatchewan as a young lady to help her two brothers, Joseph and William, who owned businesses. During her time in Canora, she met Joseph Romanow of Tadmore, Saskatchewan and they were married on June 9, 1946 in Alvena, Saskatchewan. Joseph and Frances made their home in Canora where she lived at the same address for over 60 years. She moved into St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2009.

Frances was a charter member of the Canora branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada. In 2011, she was recognized as the longest surviving member of the branch for 65 years of service. Frances, along with her husband, Joseph, were very active and supported the construction of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canora. They provided many necessary items such as decorative embroidered altar clothes, icon towels, banners and flowers which were required for the preparation of the church and the celebration of divine services.

Frances was a loving, kind and determined woman. She gave tirelessly to her family, the Catholic Church and her community. She instilled these values in her children and to those around her. Her children had a great start in life as a result of her commitment to family values. When grandchildren came along, she turned her attention to them. The entire family looked forward to her visits and the grandchildren always made sure there was plenty of flour on hand in case Baba got the urge to make perogies. Her great grandchildren brought her much joy and her eyes lit up when they came to visit her at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

The family extends their gratitude to the Sisters and staff of St. Joseph’s Home and to the doctors and staff at St. Paul’s hospital for their compassionate and kind care.

Prayers will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at Park Funeral Chapel (311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon) and the Divine Liturgy will be held on Monday, August 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canora, Saskatchewan. Interment will be at the Canora Cemetery alongside her husband, Joseph.

To send online condolences, visit www.parkfuneral.ca “Obituaries & Tributes”.
