<div itemprop="description"><br>Hester, 101 years, passed away peacefully at Stensrud Lodge. <br> <br>She was predeceased by her husband, Herman (2015); parents, Thomas and Annie Lusted; sisters, Betty Lou Christie, Margarita “Rita” (Jack) Desmond; brothers, Douglas (Helen) Lusted, Pat Lusted; and brother-in-law, John Reid. <br> <br>Hester leaves to mourn her nieces and nephews: Robyn (Kevin) Mott and children Sean and Karyn (Edmonton, AB); Calvin Lusted (Ontario); Allen, Anne and Scott Christie (USA); John and Nancy Desmond (USA); Robert Lusted (USA); sister-in-law, Jewel Reid and her sons, Doug (Joanne) Reid, Rod (Heather) Redi, Ken (Kris) Reid and their children Jonathan and Breann. <br> <br>Hester was born in Swan Lake, MB. She received her schooling in Los Angeles, CA, Truax, SK and Winnipeg, MB. She graduated from the Regina General Hospital School of Nursing and went on to receive a Public Health Nursing Certificate from McGill University. Public health was her major interest. Hester continued her education and graduated from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York with a BSc degree and a Masters of Arts degree in Nursing Education. <br> <br>Hester’s nursing career led her in many directions, including the V.O.N. as a staff nurse in Winnipeg to the national office in Ottawa. In 1953 Hester was appointed to the faculty of the U of S Nursing School, later the College of Nursing. Professor Kernen was appointed Dean of the College of Nursing in 1973, a position she held until her retirement in 1980. During this time she was deeply involved in moving the focus of nurses training from the individual hospitals to the university’s College of Nursing. Hester received a honourary life membership to the Canadian Health Association and life memberships to both the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association and the Western and North-Western Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (WNRCASN). <br> <br>Hester and Herman travelled extensively until failing health prevented this. They were truly soul mates. Hester’s last few years were spent in Stensrud Lodge. <br> <br>The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff, especially on 2nd floor, of Stensrud Lodge.
