Shtenko, Makar
January 25, 1914 - January 10, 2017

Makar was admitted to the emergency department at Saskatoon City Hospital on December 6, 2016 and passed away in hospital on January 10, 2017 just short of his 103rd birthday.

He is predeceased by three siblings, his wife Olha, and son, Valentin.

Surviving are his daughter Ria of Saskatoon, grandson Paul of North Vancouver, grandson Mark of London, England, and great grandchildren Ella, Mia, and Max.

He was born in the village of Svenukhy (presently called Previtne) in the Volyn Region of Ukraine. In May 1939 he left the land holdings he had in Ukraine. With his wife, son, brother-in-law and close family friends he immigrated to Canada, settling in “the hills” of Glenside Municipality North of Biggar, Saskatchewan. After a few years he acquired more farm land near Arelee in the Eagle Creek Municipality and moved his family there. After a period of time he acquired more farm land outside of Saskatoon while continuing to farm all of the land he had acquired previously.

Although farming was his primary passion, he maintained other interests (cultivated during his time in Ukraine) namely, beekkeeping, growing fruit trees, and carpentry. The latter interest enabled him not only to make furniture, but also to build two houses in Saskatoon (from the foundation up).

When he was not working, he enjoyed activities with a circle of friends many of whom had been maintained since his arrival in Canada. These activities included parties with Kaiser and group singing (an Old Country cultural practice), and summer vacations in the Rockies. Toward the end of his life, after most of his friends had passed on he continued to maintain an interest in life, living in his own house and helping on the farm within the limitations imposed by his state of health. His quiet care and enthusiasm will be missed.

A Private Family Graveside service will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017 at Woodlawn Cemetery in the early afternoon after which all are welcome to join the family for tea at Makar’s house.

To share memories and condolences, visit www.parkfuneral.ca “Obituaries-Contribute”. Arrangements entrusted to Kari Peters, Park Funeral Home, 306.244.2103.
