With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Helen Logan on July 23, 2016.

Helen was born Helen Virginia Staflund to Mayme and Otto Staflund on June 7, 1918 on a farm near Holmes City, Minnesota, and was soon joined by her sister Eleanor. During the children’s early years, the family lived on the farm and at Lake Darling. They moved to Alexandria, Minnesota in early 1924 where Helen started grade 1 at Lincoln school on September 1 of that year.

Her father became a British Subject and bought land near Nora, Saskatchewan. As a result, the family moved to Canada in 1927. Helen finished elementary school in 1931 and over the next 6 years between helping on the farm and working on finishing high school, in part by correspondence, Helen graduated from Grade 12 in Wadena in 1937 with honours. That fall she attended “Normal School” in Saskatoon, obtaining her teaching certificate in 1938.

Helen taught at various country schools around Saskatchewan from the fall of 1938 until 1945 when she came back to Saskatoon, teaching at Caswell & King George Schools. She ended her first “stint” of teaching at the end of the 1947 school year as she married the love of her life, Keith Logan on August 2 of that year. Following their honeymoon, the couple moved to Regina.

Over the next 20 years, Helen was a home maker, raising her children and taking evening classes in furtherance of her Bachelor of Education degree. In 1966, the family moved to Saskatoon because of Keith’s transfer due to his work at Federated Co-operative’s Limited. In the fall of 1967, with the children growing up, she returned to teaching, this time at John Dolan School where she taught until her retirement in 1980. During her teaching years she continued to take night classes and at the age of 56 in 1974, Helen achieved her Bachelor of Education degree. Her father was so proud!

As Helen was widowed rather early, she learned to fill the voids with many activities. Helen spent much of her earlier retirement years traveling to various places, some being: Europe, the Holy Land, China and Russia. Helen loved art, and art galleries and was so proud of her Swedish heritage. Her later years were filled with attending events such as symphony concerts and as well, she was involved in many clubs and organizations such as Friendly Visits, Saskatchewan University Women, Toastmasters, and the Century Club, just to name a few.

Helen loved to sing and was active in various church choirs over the years; Wascana United Church in Regina, St. Martin’s United Church and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Saskatoon until the age of 87.
She resided at the Palisades in Saskatoon for the last 11 years of her life where she enjoyed the supper gatherings and various social activities offered there. Helen was a great story teller and she loved sharing these with family and friends.

Helen was predeceased by her mother in 1970, by both her husband and her father in 1976, her sister Eleanor Kirk in 2001 and her sister’s husband Ross Kirk in 2004.

She is survived by her son Donald (Barbara) Logan, her daughter Kirsten (Martel Popescul) Logan, and her granddaughter, Jessica Waller. She is also survived by Barb’s children: Shelley (Lee) Branstetter, Adriann (Angie) Ekstrom and Cameron Ekstrom; Marty’s children: Robert Popescul (Alicia Wotherspoon), Aron (Janelle) Popescul, Jane Popescul (Spencer Bourhis), and Lee (Jenni) Popescul. She is further survived by “the great grands”: Madison, Nolan, Will, Benn, Austin, Kate, Elizabeth and Anna; plus various nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family thanks the great staff of the St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care Unit for Helen's care during her final days and also thanks to everyone at the Palisades where she made her home during the last 11 years.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Park Funeral Chapel, 311 3rd Avenue North, Saskatoon. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

To share memories and condolences, visit www.parkfuneral.ca “Obituaries”.

Arrangements entrusted to Greg Lalach, Park Funeral Chapel, 306.244.2103.
