Orest Sawitsky
February 14, 1933 – February 8, 2017

On Wednesday, February 8, 2017 Orest Sawitsky, husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away suddenly at the age of 83 years old, just 6 days before his 84th birthday.

Orest will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Laura Sawitsky (nee Bodnar); his daughters Kimberly (Kenneth) Sarauer and their children Celeste, Jonah and Brennan; Kanndece (Victor) Quijada-Sawitsky and their children Samuel and Matteo; and his son Karrnnel (wife, Amy Matysio). He will also be missed by his pet and grandpets: Tigger, Chiyo, and Disco. He is survived by his sisters Marion Shutiak, Elsie Stus, Petrunella Kotelko, sister-in-law Mary Sawitsky and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Orest was predeceased by his parents Michael and Annie Sawitsky (nee Hawrish); brothers Myroslaw, Morris, and Julius; sister Victoria Chomyn; sister-in-law Donna Sawitsky, and brothers-in-law Peter Shutiak, William Stus and Nick Chomyn.

Orest’s 3 passions were family, farming, and music. He was born and grew up on a farm near Carpenter, SK. He worked in numerous places throughout SK., AB., and BC before opening his business Cylinder Head Service, meeting his future wife Laura and settling down in Saskatoon. Here they raised 3 children and enjoyed spending time on the farm near Wakaw, as well as travelling throughout Canada and to Hawaii playing as the family band – The Sawitsky Family Fiddlers. This was a legacy very close to Orest’s heart, as his children were 5th generation fiddlers in his family. Once his grandchildren arrived, Orest focused his time on ‘God’s precious gifts’ and would drop everything when they called on “Gido” or “Dodo” (his nickname given by his grandkids). Thankfully, these special family memories are preserved in the numerous videotapes and recordings he took over the years.

Orest had a talent in creating something from nothing, and would often amaze us in what he could invent. Many of these original designs were made at the farm, where he found peace and gratification. Or, we would call him up to fix something and within minutes, a solution would be found. We will dearly miss these learning opportunities, but are very thankful for the resourcefulness and determination he taught us.

Thank you, dad, for teaching us where true happiness comes from, the importance of family, making time for what matters, and going after your dreams.

In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Children's Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan c/o Mending Little Hearts Fund of SK, or St. Paul's Roman Catholic Co-Cathedral.

Vigil Prayer will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Both services will be held at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Co-Cathedral, 720 Spadina Crescent East. Rite of Committal in Woodlawn Catholic Cemetery will follow.

To share memories and condolences, visit www.parkfuneral.ca “Obituaries-Contribute”.
