Charlotte Anita Heath
August 17, 1946 - February 14, 2014
Charlotte is survived by her loving husband Jackson, daughter Kim (sons Vincente and Dante), daughter-in-law Bonnie (son Travis). She was predeceased by her son Shayne and her parents Al and Annette Frelich.
Charlotte was born on August 17, 1946 in Leer, Germany immigrating to Canada with her parents in 1948. The family settled in Meota, Saskatchewan where she spent her childhood years. Charlotte had many fond memories of the time spent with her Grandmother and Grandfather Frelich during the years in Meota. The family moved to Saskatoon when Charlotte was in her early teens where she attended Saskatoon Technical Collegiate Institute. Charlotte met Jackson in Saskatoon where they married on November 24, 1962. She and Jackson resided in Saskatoon where they raised their children Kim and Shayne. Charlotte enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren Dante, Travis and Vincente. She worked with Jackson in their electrical business and at St. Paul’s Hospital for 25 years.
Charlotte loved the outdoors, she enjoyed archery, bird hunting and fishing but her main passion was hunting and trapping. She hunted a variety of animals which included antelope, bear, deer, elk and moose so there was never a shortage of wild game in the freezer. One of the highlights of her hunting years was in 1976 when she was awarded a trophy for the largest elk in Saskatchewan (this made the guys she hunted with jealous). She also received awards for moose in later years.
Charlotte and Jackson were hunting the Greenwater area when they met Odd and Laurel Steistol, after the hunting season was over Odd invited them to accompany him on his trapline. Charlotte was hooked on starting her own trapline after receiving advice from Odd on trapping skills and Laurel on the process of fur finishing. She was looking for a trapping area west of Saskatoon when she met Bob and Rose Marie Strelioff who farmed in the Arlee district. She was offered a building on their farm to live in and this became the base of her trapping operation. Charlotte trapped beaver, coyote, fox, mink, muskrat, raccoon and weasel. She operated her trapline for 10 years from 1978 to 1988 in an area which covered over 200 square miles.
A young dog in poor condition and very wild wandered into the farm yard one spring. Charlotte befriended him and took him home where she nursed him back to health. She named the dog Shep and he became her faithful companion on the trapline.
Charlotte and Jackson have a hunting cabin on Buzz and Grace Garrison’s homestead in the Weirdale district where she hunted from in her later years. Charlotte took her grandson, Travis on deer hunting trips in the northern forest zone where she shared her hunting knowledge with him. Travis shot a nice buck deer on one of these trips.
Charlotte was a member of the Saskatoon Archery Club, the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation and the Ontario Trapping Association.
Charlotte and Jackson enjoyed a six week trip to Alaska, British Columbia and the Yukon in 2010 where she fished for halibut, king crab and salmon.
A Celebration of Charlotte’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Park Funeral Chapel (311 - 3rd Avenue North, Saskatoon). Interment will take place a later date.
