Edwin Walter Fobel
October 16, 1937 – February 23, 2014

Edwin passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital on Monday February 23 at the age of 77 with family by his side.

Ed was born in Saskatoon at City Hospital in 1937 and became a Broadway resident at the age of 1 week. He grew up with his mother, father, and sister in the Broadway area. He attended Haultain for elementary school, Nutana Collegiate for high school, and the University of Saskatchewan earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree. After graduating from University of Saskatchewan Ed had enthusiasm for travel and lived in Hawaii for a year and later travelled throughout Europe working in a bakery in London England for 6 months and in a Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg Germany for 6 months. Ed had many wonderful stories of adventures in Hawaii and Europe including visiting the Berlin wall during the cold war.

As a young boy in late 1940’s his first job was as a Star Phoenix carrier and he told us of the huge snow drifts he had to battle to deliver paper. Later, in the 1950’s, Ed briefly lived in Marathon, Ontario working in a lumber mill and he also worked as a YMCA Camp Leader at camp Wakonda at Wakaw Lake and at the YMCA in Banff. He would regularly share great memories of those times with us. The Fobel family owned and operated the Nutana Bakery on Broadway and the day it opened in 1951, Ed began working as a teenage helper. Together Ed and Vera Fobel owned and operated the business from 1973 – 2009. Ed’s business skills shined as Nutana Bakery became an exceptionally popular business in the city providing mouth-watering pastries, breads and cakes – the chocolate dip donuts were a city favorite! Ed once took an order for 10,000 cupcakes for a Canada Day celebration. He was also actively involved in Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association both as a coach and as a Director in the 1980’s and was thrilled to follow his sons’ and grandsons’ athletic endeavours throughout his life.

Ed loved to spend the summers at the family cabin golfing, boating, waterskiing and swimming (although he spent much of his time fixing things!). The long summer evenings around the campfire were very special to him. He also enjoyed trips to Vancouver, Victoria and Los Angeles to visit his sons and grandchildren. We enjoyed a lifetime of happy memories with him. He was a truly a caring and giving man. It was often said “they don’t make men like him anymore”.

He is dearly loved and remembered by his wife Vera, sons Brennan and Malcolm, grandsons Kevin and Jeremy, sister Irma, sisters-in-law Nancy and Eleanor, brothers-in-law Bill and Edward and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

He is predeceased by his loving parents Katherine and Ferdinand, his son Darrell and his grandchild Nicholas.

Public viewing will be held on Friday, March 6, 2015 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Park Funeral Chapel (311 Third Avenue North). The Funeral Service will be held on Zion Lutheran Church (323 4th Avenue South) on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Randy Meissner officiating. Interment will take place in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

To view this notice and share your memories, visit www.parkfuneral.ca “Obituaries & Tributes”.

Arrangements entrusted to Park Funeral Chapel, 306.244.2103.
