Harry Carl Nakoneshny
November 5, 1932 - June 3, 2014
HARRY CARL NAKONESHNY
With heavy hearts and deep sadness, the family of Harry Nakoneshny announces his passing on June 3, 2014.
He is survived by his wife, Ann (née Chamulak), to whom he was married to for 58 years; his lovely children: daughter, Shane McCleary (Michael) of Toronto; son, Ward Nakoneshny of Saskatoon; daughter, Lanna Cairns (Brad) of Salt Lake City; and his two precious grandchildren, Jasper and Quinn Cairns.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Annie Nakoneshny. He is survived by his four younger sisters, Helen Turcot, Henrietta Strueby (Benjamin), Goldie Blummers (Arthur), Mary Devernichuk (Larry); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Harry was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. He grew up in the family farm in the Lanigan district and attended Elmsville Elementary School in Lanigan, high school in Humboldt and later studied Business Administration in Saskatoon. He returned home to Lanigan for a period to help his parents on the farm, then later returned to Saskatoon to build his future.
In 1957 Harry married Ann Chamulak of Porcupine Plain, whose continual love and undying support was a great factor in his success as an entrepreneur and land developer. Harry and Ann made their home in Saskatoon, building customized homes for his family while raising three beautiful children with love and opportunity.
With enthusiasm and always a positive outlook on life, he lived his dreams. He worked hard, enjoyed the challenges and loved being with people. However, he enjoyed his greatest professional success when he became a general contractor in the residential housing industry, building many homes and apartment buildings in and around Saskatoon. Here his accomplishments were very rewarding to him.
This experience lead to many opportunities for service, most prominently the management of a residential rehabilitation assistance program for the City of Saskatoon. Harry received recognition from the Federal Government for this and was asked by the housing authority from Ottawa to share his knowledge and develop a nationwide program for those in need. When this program ended Harry was appointed to the City of Saskatoon to work in the planning and building department, where he worked until his retirement.
During his lifetime Harry was involved in community work, especially working with children as a hockey coach, involved in Holliston Home and School Association and the Ronald McDonald House.
Harry loved his church and his faith. As a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, Saints Peter and Paul, for over 40 years, Harry was involved in numerous church activities: serving on the Parish Council; President of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood, Bishop Roberecki Branch; member of the Knights of Columbus, Sheptytsky Council and Treasurer at the National Level. In 2001, Harry was invested into the office of the Sir Knight of the Brotherhood organization. In addition, he was always busy several nights a week keeping up his commitment to his church community.
A great passion of Harry’s was traveling with his family throughout the world. Harry didn’t always care for the Saskatchewan winters, and for numerous years took his family on tropical Christmas vacations. The Hawaiian Islands were one of his favorite places to visit. He took several trips every year to visit his kids once they moved way to Toronto, Los Angeles, the Napa Valley and Salt Lake City. He enjoyed the drive, being in nature and sharing special moments with his wife.
Harry was well liked by everyone, a friend to all who knew him. He was always so jovial, happy, upbeat and welcoming to those he may have now known. He always did his best, a perfectionist at heart, tried the hardest and was appreciated by his friends. He as a very social person, loved to entertain, listening to music and of course, a true Canadian as he loved watching winter sports.
Harry was a great husband, always supportive, respectful and loving to his wife. He helped her at home, doing anything she requested and was very considerate all the time. His gardening skills were over-the-top, always keeping his home and yard in pristine shape. Harry was a great father, endlessly helping his children, moving them across the country, driving them to various provinces for dance competitions – he did everything for his children. Harry was overjoyed being a grandfather, taking them to the park, reading to them every night before they went to bed and always teaching them new things. He adored them and was always asking them numerous questions over the phone and Skyping with them.
The family of Harry thank God for having him for so many years in their lives. He was so wonderful to be around, so very special to us, an amazing father and husband who was always kind and so much fun to be around. He made the world a better place – always sharing his light and love of life for those he came into contact with. May his perpetual light shine on in all of our lives, opening our hearts, being kind to one another today and every single day for the rest of eternity. We will never forget you.
