Nick Chrusch
March 2, 1917 – April 8, 2017

With great sadness the family of Nick Chrusch announce his passing on Saturday April 8, 2017 in Saskatoon at the age of 100 years.

Nick was predeceased by his first wife Frances Chrusch (nee Wozniak) in 1957.

Nick will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Rose, daughters Maureen Chrusch (Norm Yum), Sonia Chrusch and son Dan Chrusch (Simone) and special granddaughter Sydney.

Also left to cherish his memory are his brothers Michael (Beryl) Cruise, John (Angeline), Julian; sisters Mary Repin and Vicki (Brian) Curtis; sisters-in-law Olga Kondra and Olga (Bill’s Olga) Kondra; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbours.

Nick was the third of ten children born to John and Mary (Kopiakowski) Chrusch, Ukrainian immigrants. He was raised on the family farm south east of Vonda and attended the nearby La Martine School. After finishing school in 1937, he worked on the family farm as well as the farm of his brother Joe until Joe’s death in 1942. During the summer of 1942 Nick hauled the gravel used for the foundation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Ukrainian Catholic Church in Vonda. He lived in Saskatoon until 1946 trucking during the summer and driving taxi in the winter.

In 1946, he bought a half section of land two miles south of Vonda that became his beloved farm. In that same year, Nick bought his first combine, a John Deere combine called “The Clipper”. He custom combined for a number of years and continued to acquire land in the area. On October 17, 1959 he married Rose Kondra. Nick and Rose raised their family on the farm and enjoyed many years of happiness and hard work. Nick farmed for 70 years and lived there until November 2016 when he fell and broke his hip.

Nick was a member of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool from 1942 until 1983 when the elevator in Vonda was sold to a local farmer. At various times while he was a member of the local committee in Vonda he served as chairman or secretary. Nick also served on the Board of the Grierson School District.

Nick loved nature, whether it be the wild flowers that he always picked for Rose, or the wild animals that prowled his farmyard such as deer, foxes, raccoons and skunks. He took his children to pick wild mushrooms and Saskatoon berries. He knew the juicier and sweeter Saskatoon berries were on the neighbour’s land and might have trespassed once or twice to pick those berries. Nick and Rose had a large vegetable garden every summer. He passed on his love of growing things to his children and granddaughter. He said “I feel close to God working on the land”.

Prayers for Nick will be held on Monday, April 17, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. from Park Funeral Home (311 3rd. Ave. N. Saskatoon).
